If you've ever seen the movie “Field of Dreams,” do you remember the saying “if you build it they will come?” Well, what ended up happening was Kevin Costner (the main character) built a baseball field in the middle of a corn field, and suddenly baseball players started coming out thin air. Unfortunately, the same situation doesn't hold true for websites. Just because you build a website, it doesn’t mean people will come to it, but getting people to it is the essential key to profiting from a website.

There are a few ways to make money from a website:

  1. Websites for Ecommerce (Selling Online) – This is selling a product or service to someone through your website.  In order to make this happen, you will need to be able to take payments through your website with a payment form or shopping cart and a merchant account.
  2. Websites for Generating Leads – Typically a website can generate a lead for you by someone calling in, emailing you, or filling out a form on a website then you can have a salesperson follow up to take an order either by phone or in person. If you are an offline business, this method works best for you!
  3. Websites for on-site advertising – This is when you sell space on your website for someone to advertise. This is strategy is most effective for high-traffic websites.
  4. Websites for click-thru advertising – These websites make money either when someone clicks on a link on your site or when someone clicks on a link on your site and buys something from the site you linked to.

1 - Search Engine Optimization

This is getting to the top of the search engines such as Google and Yahoo! In their “free”, “natural”, or “organic” listings.  These are the main listings not the sponsored listings.  In order to make this happen, you will have to either become savvy at building websites or find someone like our company who is already savvy. Getting to the top of these results is competitive and involves building a quality site with quality content, adding search engine friendly code to the site which is something a webmaster would typically do, letting the search engines know about your site by submitting it, and continually updating and promoting the site over time.  Typically you are paying a consultant rather than the actual search engine for this service.

The traffic you generate doesn’t cost you anything. The down side is, there is never any guarantee of showing up where you want to in the results, and it can also take you a long time to get your site to the top. The key is to find out what criteria the search engines are looking for and optimize your website for them.

Here is the strategy you would use:  Think of all the words a real estate investor would search for related to property management such as “rental properties,” “property management,” or “rental agreement.” The list can be quite extensive. Next, you would set up an account with the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo! and pay to show up in the search results for the keywords you have chosen.

What is the benefit to you as a business owner? As long as you are listed for the correct keywords, you get only qualified prospective leads, in this case real estate investors, to your website. The best part is you can control every aspect of the marketing, you can make changes or improvements at any time, and you only pay for the clicks you receive!

PPC marketing is highly flexible and scalable to any budget and it is easy to track. Without the right knowledge, however, you can spend a lot of money on clicks that don't turn into leads or sales.

The key to developing success with marketing partnerships is to find win-win situations.

If you structure it right, everything is based on results. Your partner doesn’t get paid if you don’t get paid.

4 - Email Marketing

You can pay other companies for sending referrals or selling your product online using affiliate programs. The benefit of this relationship is you only pay for results.

6 - Link Partnerships

This is a simple relationship where another website links to your website. Not only will this help you be more search engine friendly, it also can help you get qualified buyers to your site when they click on your link from the partner website.

7 - Banner Advertising

We have all seen them while searching online: pop-up windows, animated banner ads, even moving ads that cover a webpage and suddenly disappear. If you can create a compelling and eye-catching ad and find a partner to display it, this type of advertising can be very effective in generating large amounts of traffic.

8 - Online Public Relations

9 - Viral Marketing

What if you took this concept and instead of being malicious with it, used it in your marketing? That is the idea behind viral marketing. Viral marketing is anything spread from one of your leads to everyone they know. If you have ever received a forwarded email from a friend saying how Microsoft is giving away money if you forward the email on, you’ve been a part of viral marketing. The key to viral marketing is to provide a great benefit to the person sending and the people receiving. The campaign should also be relevant to your target customer.
